Research & Development

Contamac has taken part in a number of collaborative ventures in recent years, further underlying our commitment to developing leading technology products for a diverse range of applications. Although we strive to develop new products for our core business, we recognise the importance of exploring new industries, where our specialist unique blend of skills and experience can be utilised for exciting new developments.

Contamac is a world-leading manufacturer of speciality polymers, primarily for the production of contact lenses and intraocular lenses. Our considerable expertise in this area means we are equipped to produce specialist polymers for other applications. Indeed, we are particularly suited to produce polymers for medical devices and implants, due to the stringent controls we employ for the production of materials for intraocular lenses, which are implantable devices.

Collaborations undertaken to date have ranged from pure research based activities, and subsequent product and process developments, to simple contract manufacturing of components and devices. The expertise and facilities we possess, together with our trusted network of analysis providers, ensure we are able to provide significant support and initiative to any project. Successful completion of customer projects is more likely when utilising Contamac's expertise rather than trying to develop such skills alone.

The range of equipment and techniques that are utilised as part of our research activities, can be found in the contract testing section, together with other information on our capabilities. Through a number of partners and external testing facilities, we also have access to a wide range of other resources including NMR spectroscopy, HPLC and mass spectroscopy to name just a few.

Projects we have been involved with have been very diverse and those outside our core industry have included the following:

  • Implantable devices for real-time monitoring of blood glucose levels
  • The application of ultrasound to speed the delivery of a well-known beverage
  • Blood monitoring systems for use in intensive care units
  • Artificial eyes for teaching surgical techniques
  • Implantable materials for refractive correction using laser surgery

Contamac has worked in partnership with a number of academic institutions and University "spin-out" companies. We have welcomed the opportunity to work with many centres of excellence, both in this country and abroad. Such collaborations provide an opportunity to transfer technology and expertise between parties, in pursuit of the development of new products. As an industrial partner, we are able to find applications for newly developed technology, which may otherwise be of no further use in a particular application.

We would be delighted to discuss further opportunities to work with academic and industrial partners alike. We believe the niche market in which we operate, and our specialist knowledge of polymer systems, makes us an ideal choice for collaborative opportunities to develop tomorrow's products.
